12 Days of Christmas: Day 3 | 2017 | How to Give Back During the Holidays

Welcome to Day 3 of my 12 Days of Christmas!!

The holiday season is such a hectic time of buying presents for our friends and family and thinking about what we might receive as gifts, that we often forget about those that won’t be giving or receiving anything this year. It’s important amongst all of the gift craziness to remember to give back and help the less fortunate as much as we can.

If you’re at a loss of good ideas to help give back, here are 12 things that you might find worthy of doing yourself, or give you inspiration for you own idea!

Make Homeless Packages

This is such a nice way to give back. It may take a little time to put together but if you grab small gift bags and put some things in it such as a water bottle, snacks, socks, or gloves, it makes for such a caring gesture. Once you make these little bags drive around your neighborhood and whenever you see a homeless person present them with this small package. They will be eternally grateful and nothing will compare to the feeling you get by making someone in need’s life just a little bit easier. If you have extra time sit and talk with them for a few minutes.

Volunteer at a Homeless Shelter

During the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve and Christmas day shelters often lack the help they need. Even if you’re just scooping soup or being a conversation companion, you’re making the holiday’s much happier and easier for some.

Donate Winter Clothes

This is an easy way to clear out your closets for new stuff AND give back. Just full a bag or two with warm clothes that you no longer wear and bring it to your nearest shelter or Goodwill.

Pay for Someone’s Layaway Anonymously

Go to a store like Toys R Us or Target and ask an associate to help you find someone’s layaway that’s in your budget and anonymously pay it off. That family will eternally be grateful for the little help that you’re providing them with this season.

Make Cookies for Senior Citizens or Kids

This one is so simple! Make a batch of your favorite cookies and drop them off to your nearest pre-school, elementary school, or senior living facility. Your treats will be so appreciated.

Do a Small Act of Kindness Everyday

This is my personal favorite. I love small acts of kindness all year around! Little things like paying for the person behind you in a drive thru or leaving your waitress a little extra tip is so simple, affordable, and kind. It will leave you and whoever you’re helping smiling for days.

Donate Blood

This one isn’t for everyone but if you don’t mind having a little bit of blood taken you will be saving multiple lives! This is the ultimate way to give back.

Send Holiday Cards to Soldiers

This is a good one if you have kids in your life that want to do something nice around the holidays. This time of the year is often very difficult for soldiers who cannot be home with their families, help to make it a little easier by sending them a card with kind words.

Donate a Toy to Toys for Tots

Every little kid deserves to open a present on Christmas morning, but unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to do so. Make some kids super happy this season and donate a toy or two.

Host a Hot Chocolate Stand

This is another one that is perfect if your kids want to give back. Make a hot chocolate stand and donate all of the earnings to a good charity cause.

Make Cozy Blankets

This is perfect for the winter season. Make homemade blankets and either give them to friends and family for free or try to sell them and give the earnings to a charity!

Just Be Nice

If you lack the money, time, or means to do anything like the above suggestions, just being nice to everyone is good enough! Smile at strangers on the street, be friendly to everyone you meet, and do small things like helping your family out around the house.

It’s easy to get caught up in all of the shiny new things to give and get around Christmas time but just take a few moments to remember to give to those that may not be having as happy a time as you. I hope these ideas gave you some inspiration to start giving back in anyway that you can!

Happy Giving everyone!
