Over all thoughts:
I recently purchased the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea foundation as a birthday present to myself, and I must say that I’m in love. This is definitely one of my new holy grail foundations. The whole idea of the Rainforest of the Sea line from Tarte is genius to me; the whole line is intended to hydrate the skin and still leave a radiant finish to your makeup. The only negative things I found was that it claims to be full-coverage foundation lasting for 12 hours and I found both of these to be false (at least for me). But, there’s so many things to love about this foundation. It truly does hydrate my skin, it leaves a beautiful finish, and it hides blemishes.
So let’s dive into it!
This packaging is gorgeous! All of the Rainforest of the Sea collection incorporates a shiny purple-gold ombre somewhere in the items’ packaging, and I can’t get enough of it! The lid of the foundation has that beautiful ombre color along with a completely matte glass bottle. It’s so sleek and simple.
When you twist off the top it is a dropper applicator with a button on the top. When I first saw this I was a little unsure how I would feel about it because I typically prefer pump foundations. While I still would rather have a pump, the dropper isn’t bad and it makes putting on makeup even more fun! The only real downfall of the dropper is that it’s hard to get a lot of product without repeatedly needing to put the dropper back into the bottle.
I honestly love this formula. The fact that the foundation is water-based in amazing. I feel like there aren’t too many current options for water-based make up products which makes this one like gold! It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and like I’m not wearing anything at all. The description of this foundation claims that it is full coverage, however I found that it is more like a medium coverage but definitely able to be built up when you add more. While it was a little misleading when ordering the product, I actually prefer a more buildable foundation so that I could choose to have a lighter wear or more full coverage.
Okay so don’t get me wrong because I definitely still love this foundation and I’ll be wearing it for awhile. But this definitely did not last as long as it claimed. It claims to last for a full 12 hours and I’ve found that it only fully lasts on me for about 4-5 hours. After that it begins to settle in to lines and creases and gets a little flaky in dry spots. There are other factors that could be affecting this such as the primer and setting spray I’m using or how hot it’s been outside. I will continue to wear this and take note of the amount of time it lasts but so far this has been the least impressive aspect of the foundation.
What’s the best applicator to apply this with?
I have used a beauty blender, a foundation brush, and a silicone “sponge” to apply this and so far my best application was with a beauty blender. I always tend to lean toward the beauty blender with any foundation so this may just be my biased answer but it seems to come off the most hydrating and “radiant” when using a beauty blender.
What skin type is this best for?
Personally I have combination skin and it seems to work really well with my skin. The only problem I’ve experienced with this is flaking in certain dry spots after having it on for a few hours.
Do I recommend this product?
Yes. While I was a little unimpressed with the time that this lasts on the skin, overall I find this to be a great foundation that is super hydrating with a beautiful dewy finish. Because of it being water-based it feels like I’m wearing nothing with this foundation. I definitely recommend it to everyone.
